Brick and block paving can be used almost anywhere - drives, patios, paths and can also be mixed with other types of paving to give an endless permutation of styles and designs.
We have a huge amount of experience with block paving in Essex, and we know that the key to a successful block paving installation is not just the look of the final block paved drive or path, but the preparation that goes in to it.
By far the most popular form of block paving in Essex is the moulded concrete block. Available in a range of thicknesses from 40mm to 100mm, but for domestic work the most suitable block paving is 50mm, 60mm or 65mm. An enormous range of styles and colours are available. Most block paving blocks are 200mm x 100mm, giving a nice easy 50 blocks per square metre of block paving
The best way to lay block paving is the 'Flexible Paving' method, which means that the block paving is laid on a sand bed, and the joints filled with a fine sand (all block paving blocks have 3mm spacing lugs to give a uniform appearance).
The key to a successful block paving drive, patio or path lies in the total construction of the block paving drive, patio or path. This consists of five main elements:
1. Block Paving Prepared Sub Grade: This is the very bottom part of the block paving drive construction, and is effectively the ground beneath the drive. The surface needs to be dug to a depth of approximately 200mm. This allows an extra 100mm over and above the actual sub base and brick layer depth to make sure the ground is solid (with no soft spots) and free from weeds.
2. Block Paving Sub-Base: This is a 100mm thick layer of unbound aggregates, which is really the 'Underlay' for the drive, and spreads the load across the drive or path. Without a proper sub-base the block paving drive, patio or path will not last very long!
3. Block Paving Edge Course: These are the courses of brick that go round the edge of the block paving drive, patio or path. They are bedded on concrete and the shoulders are haunched to keep the block paving in place. They are laid after the sub-base has been put in.
4. Block Paving Bedding Layer: This is the 30-50mm layer of course grit sand which is laid over the sub-base and between the Edge Course. This is the area where the block paving will be laid.
5. Block Paving Layer: The block paving gets laid on the bedding layer in the desired pattern. Working from the edges, and not standing on the screeded bedding layer, the block paving is laid hand-tight to form the desired pattern.
